If you lead an active lifestyle, the right coating will protect against scratches and dust alike.

However, if you work long hours at a computer, you may find digital protection coatings helpful.

Different spectacle lens coatings are meant to improve the durability of the glasses as well as visibility. Different coatings make wearing glasses more pleasant and have an effect on the sharpness and clarity of your vision, the look of the lenses, how easy to use and clean they are, their durability and their dust resistance, among other things. (It should also be noted that they can be more easily cleaned when they fog up.)

HARDCOAT

Hardcoat makes plastic lenses a lot more resistant to scratching. It does not ensure 100% scratch resistance, however, so we advise cleaning the lenses with special lens cleaning solutions and cloths only.

ANTI-REFLECTION COATING

AR or anti-reflection coating is put onto the lens surface to reduce reflection and to achieve a clearer image with higher contrast. Regular spectacle lenses, whether glass or plastic, reflect around 4% of light from one surface, or around 8% from both surfaces, which is why not all light (and therefore information) reaches the eye through the lens. The loss of light can be up to 20% in the case of thin (thinned) lenses. Reflection-related light loss is prevented by applying an anti-reflection or AR coating to the optical surface of the lens, which reduces the reflection rate to 1%. AR brings out the natural beauty of the eyes and also ensures great visibility in difficult light conditions, for example when driving in the dark. In addition to optical improvements, there is also an important aesthetic effect: the lens is almost unnoticeable, which makes your glasses seem lighter.

HYDROPHOBIC COATING (WATER- AND DUST-REPELLENT)

This coating makes it easier to clean glasses, keeps them cleaner for longer and ensures that they fog up less easily.

All major lens manufacturers have significantly improved the quality of their AR coatings since 2004 by adding a molecularly dense hydrophobic (water-resistant) layer, thanks to which the surface of the lens is significantly smoother and more durable. This reduces the need to clean the glasses as often, as the coating is dirt-resistant. The superhydrophobic finish ensures a particularly smooth surface: the lenses will not catch any dirt or drops of water. Glasses with a hydrophobic coating repel water and dust and ensure that fog clears faster. To clean the glasses, all you need to use is a special (clean) microfiber cloth which will prolong the life of the glasses.

DIGITAL PROTECTION COATING

This is a coating that neutralises blue light so as to protect you against the harmful blue light emitted from digital screens.

Digital devices like TVs, computer screens, tablets and smartphones emit blue light, which is a normal phenomenon for us as part of daylight – it is designed to keep us awake during the day. However, overexposure to this light can cause eye strain, fatigue and even insomnia. A digital protection coating protects the eyes from extra tension and increases comfort in vision and boosts contrast when using everyday smart devices.

100% UV PROTECTION

This coating prevents sun damage to the eyes. UV protection means that the lens does not let ultraviolet light through (so-called blue light; less than 400 nm of visible light). UV protection is necessary to avoid the damaging effects of ultraviolet light, which is dangerous to the eyes. It is reflected in large amounts from snow and water on sunny days.
